Well, the strange end of 2015 continues with continued warm weather. I do not hesitate to admit that the latest I have every fly fished in Northern New England is the first couple days of December. But this year I am making an exception. I ventured forth on December 10 to the Lamprey River, fishing with my friend Sean Smith who may know more about that river than any man alive.
The air temperature was in the upper 50’s and the water temperature still a reasonable 42. I was fishing with a ten-foot nymphing rod with a two fly rig and a small strike indicator. The top fly was a bright pink egg pattern and the lower fly was a size- 18 yellow nymph. We started fishing in a relatively shallow run – less than three feet deep and probably closer to two. Not the water you would ordinarily find fish in during the winter when they usually hole up in deep pools with slow currents.
I flipped the rig out right in front of me for the first cast and the indicator traveled perhaps three feet before it stopped. I thought I had hooked bottom because my indicator was set rather high for such a shallow run. When I tightened up, I was astonished to feel the pulse of a fish, and when it turned, I was surprised at the size. A short time later I twisted the hook free of an 18-inch rainbow.

Three more rainbows came to the net in the next hour or so – and I know I missed a few too – before it started getting dark and the fish quit biting, although none were as big as the first. The trout took each nymph equally. Kudos to Sean who seemed to know where every fish was holding and for taking these photos for proof.
The forecast for the day before Xmas is for temps to be in the 60’s. I just might go out again, maybe to the Mousam, or the Royal, or back to the Lamprey. We are all going to have to redefine when fishing season is.
