Early Season Fishing Report

Fishing season started early this year with the early opening of the Maine Fishing Season and early stocking of selected ponds and streams. The weather for the first two weeks of April has been winterlike in Maine with several snowstorms, rainstorms, high winds, chilly days, and below-freezing nights. Water temps have stayed cold and fishing slow. Still for those persevering, fish can be caught.

I have been exploring the various tailwaters downstream from the dams on the Presumpscot River including the Sebago Dam, North Gorham Falls North Gorham Pond Dam, Dundee Dam, Gambo Dam, Mellison Dam, etc. I also have explored a few small streams that hold wild brookies. Finally, I launched my kayak on a couple local small ponds and trolled around.

I can’t say I have caught many fish but managed to hook several different species including smallmouth bass, brook trout, brown trout, and landlocked salmon while casting (not trolling). Believe it or not several came courtesy of a dry fly. I have been fishing early season small black/brown stonefly imitations because these early-season insects have been everywhere in southern Maine. See my column about them in the May issue of The Maine Sportsman when it comes out.

Love this time of year when so many creatures feel the strong pull of perpetuating the species. Here are two videos. The first, by my friend, Kevyn Fowler ,shows smelt spawning in a tiny outlet stream. Note the eggs, which will hatch in a few weeks with the emergent fry washing down into the lake before seasonal streams dry up. Near the end of the video, watch the fat brown trout cruise on screen looking to pick off a distracted or injured smelt.

The second video shows newly arrived Merganser ducks with the splendid black-and-white  males competing for females to pair off with.

The End of the Official Season

First things first. A decision will be made October 10 whether to have a public hearing on the Middle Dam replacement that I described in an earlier blog post. For those of you who get alerts when I post, and read this today or tomorrow morning, please email Joshua.Brown@Maine.gov immediately to request a public hearing because you are concerned about limited future access to the famous Middle Dam pool.

The last week of the fishing season was hit or miss for most anglers. If you intercepted a school of fish fresh from a lake than you had fabulous fishing. If you didn’t and were fishing over a few stale, fished over trout and salmon, then fishing was slow. It didn’t seem to me that many fish came up Kennebago River even though the flow was good with good rains the last week. Good numbers of trout did migrate through Little Kennebago but didn’t seem to hold in the usual spots. The early July flood really changed current flows and shallowed up some of the deeper spots. I hope this is not a permanent change.

Once again, every year convinces me further we need to extend the season because of the warming of New England. As I write this on October 9th, I haven’t even had a frost yet at Kennebago – mosquitos are still flying around, and the temperature is in the 70’s

It is quite discouraging when you lack the skills in the cialis generika bedroom, since many men become very shy, and will not want to be in another relationship. I didn’t really fish that many other places this fall because my publisher gave me an October 1st deadline for my new book, possibly titled, ” In Pursuit of Trophy Brook Trout – Timing, Tactics, and Territories” and I spent the last week guiding a very lovely client, my wife..

April Update

Well folks, it doesn’t look like ice out is going to come anytime soon in western or northern Maine. The weather continues to be seasonally cold. In southern Maine night time temps continue to be in the low 20’s and last night temps at Kennebago bottomed out at 10 degrees. These temps refreeze the lakes each night. Weather is supposed to warm up at the end of the week and with most of the snow gone, things should start really thawing.

Here is another video from last fall showing photos and underwater videos of native brook trout being trapped in streams that they started to ascend to spawn. With no rain, they were trapped in pools and couldn’t move up or down stream for a month before rains in early October raised water levels.

The Eclipse

Eclipse

I happened to be on Kennebago Lake during the afternoon of August 21st, the time of the partial eclipse. It was very interesting to see how the natural world reacted. During the peak when the sun was over 50% covered, the sunlight was definitely muted, the sky and reflected light off the water, looked like it was an hour before sunset.

Mosquitos emerged, when ordinarily they wouldn’t have in the heat of an August afternoon. The lake was calm and small trout started rising regularly. Birds such as Merlins that would only be active in the evening this time of year took flight. Loons started calling. And then as the sun re-emerged, song birds started singing like it was early morning. All very interesting.

Looking ahead, early September rain and cool temperatures for the last few weeks should mean fall spawning runs are starting now.

Mother’s Day Snow

I was up in the Rangeley area during Mother’s Day weekend, looking forward to doing some shortly-after-ice-out fishing with my wife and was greeted by heavy snow on the morning of Mother’s Day morning. The fishing had just started picking up in the Rangeley area but the snow killed the action for the day – at least for me. I had caught decent trout and salmon on the Mags and Kennebago Lake the day before.

IMG_0647IMG_0642

Of course, the snow was followed several days later by temps in the 90’s. Then temps dropped back into the 40’s with rain. The weather obviously has been extremely variable this spring. In mid-May, the fishing in Rangeley was very inconsistent because the weather and water temps were cold and the smelt runs stopped and started or were tough to fish because of heavy water. I fished the usual places to check out the action, Little Kennebago, the Logans in Kennebago Lake, Rangeley River, Camp 10 bridge on the Mags. Picked up a fish or two, hear and there — not dead but not spectacular either. Did have a huge trout on by the causeway on Kennebago Lake but lost it after a bit.

Now that’s not all, ED can be both a temporary and permanent condition, depending on the underlying cialis professional cipla symptoms. A few lucky anglers seemed to catch it just right at the Camp 10 Bridge and had lots of action, while others did not have the same experience. The Rangeley River was slower (action-wise) then it should have been.

After the snow, I headed south to Pennsylvania for a week to visit some of the well-known spring creeks. What Fun! I don’t get to fish for rainbows and browns very often because they aren’t found as easily in Maine. I hit rivers by the names of  Mud Run, Yellow Britches, Fishing Creek, LeTort, Spring Creek (at Fisherman’s Paradise) We had to work for the fish during the day because the weather was very hot and cloudless. During cloudy stretches or in the evening during sulfur hatches, the fishing was easier.
